Wanda: When did you start singing? Aaron Sledge: I’ve been singing since I was little boy…ever since I could remember.
Wanda: You were in California for a while. Where were you born and raised? Aaron Sledge: I was born and raised in Chicago. Yes, I did move to California for a short time, but I am back in Chi-town.
Wanda: Let’s talk about the new project “Da Light.” Who wrote the songs? Aaron Sledge: I did some writing. My brother BJ “the Chicago kid”, James Fauntleroy, and Icalena Crawford.
Wanda: Tell me about your journey to the release of your project entitled “Da Light.” Aaron Sledge: My journey, especially the past year or so, was very interesting. This journey taught me about being focused on and hearing the voice of God. God did a lot of talking to me between 1:00AM – 4:00AM. Psalm 5:3 (NIV) states, “In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.” There were dark days as well. The trials and tribulations included an experience of being homeless. I lived in a shelter on the North side. I searched for clothes that I paid $1 per pound. Through it all, a great testimony was birthed called “Da Light.”
Wanda: Who are some of your favorite artists? Aaron Sledge: Donnie Hathaway, Eric Dawkins (from Dawkins and Dawkins), Fred Hammond, The Winans, and John P. Kee.
Wanda: The song “Restoration” is my absolute favorite. I put it on repeat for at least a couple of days. Please tell me about this song. Aaron Sledge: I called Corey Martin and I told him that I needed a track where I could just talk with God. I didn’t want a written script. I wanted to vent. I wanted the listeners to hear my heart. Amazingly, as my conversation with God came to an end, so did the track. This song was done in one take.
Wanda: What message do you have for aspiring artists? Aaron Sledge: Whatever you do for God, do it in excellence. Make your message appealing to unbelievers. The Word says the wise win souls. God has completely blown my mind as He has anointed my music to reach the young and old. I have received emails from youth and 60-year olds who all have been blessed by the project. I encourage aspiring artists to seek the Will of God concerning how HE wants to use you musically and be obedient to His direction. God will bless you.
Wanda: Do you have any closing remarks? Aaron Sledge: I want to thank God for this amazing experience. I also would like to acknowledge my fiancé’ Hurube. She is such an awesome woman of God. She stood in the gap as a prayer warrior and intercessor on my behalf during this process. She believes in my ministry and I honor her.
